I am professional graphic designer and self-taught artist, working primarily in oil. Wildlife had been a dominant subject matter presented in a loose, colorful impressionistic style. Recent exploration of plein aire painting and urban settings have taken me into new avenues of expression. Strong abstract compositions, balance between positive and negative space, tend to be the focus of my art.
My goal as a painter is to capture the natural world that is around us every day. Wildlife and nature are a huge influence on my work. Being an outdoor enthusiast, it is what I know and understand. Whether my goal is to capture an elusive mountain lion or a common pigeon sitting on a telephone wire, I strive to capture the essence of their nature, wildness and freedom.
My preferred method of painting is Alla Prima, working wet into wet. This is not always practical, especially when working on a large canvas, but the alla prima (meaning in one sitting or session) method is the way I approach almost all of my works. Traditional Impressionism is what influences my style most. Though I enjoy a wide variety of influences from realism to abstraction, It is impressionism and representational work that speaks to me most.
